How Long Do AC Units Last in Arizona?
National averages say 15-20 years. Arizona is harder on equipment than that, and the honest answer is closer to 10-15. What shortens it and what extends it.

The short version: Nationally, air conditioners are quoted at 15 to 20 years. In the Valley, 10 to 15 is the realistic range. The difference is run hours — Arizona systems simply work far more than the same equipment would anywhere else.
Why the national number does not apply here
Manufacturers publish life expectancy based on typical use. "Typical" assumes a system that works hard for a few months and coasts the rest of the year.
That is not what happens here. A Mesa air conditioner runs hard from roughly April into October, and on the worst weeks it barely stops. Compressors wear by run hours, not by calendar years, so the same unit that lasts eighteen years in a mild climate can be finished here at twelve.
That is not a reason for gloom. It is a reason to plan on a different schedule than the brochure suggests, and to stop being surprised when a system that is "only" twelve years old starts asking for attention.
What actually shortens the life of a system here
Dirty filters. The most common cause and the easiest to avoid. A clogged filter starves the system for airflow. Reduced airflow drops the coil temperature, the coil ices, and the compressor ends up working against a block of ice. Doing that repeatedly is genuinely destructive.
Dirty condenser coils. The outdoor unit rejects heat to the air. In a climate where the air is already 110°F, that is a hard enough job without a coil packed with dust, cottonwood and grass clippings.
Low refrigerant. Refrigerant is not consumed. If a system is low, there is a leak. Topping it up without finding the leak means paying repeatedly for refrigerant while the compressor runs in conditions it was not designed for.
Undersized or oversized equipment. An undersized system never catches up in July. An oversized one satisfies the thermostat fast, shuts off, restarts, and short-cycles all day, which is hard on the compressor and does a poor job of pulling humidity out during monsoon season.
Skipped maintenance. Not because a tune-up is magic, but because it is when someone notices the failing capacitor, the loose connection or the slow leak while those are still small.
What actually extends it
There is no trick here, just the boring list:
- Change the filter on schedule. Every one to three months depending on the filter and the house. Dust, pets and construction nearby all push it toward the short end.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear. Two feet of clearance, no shrubs crowding the coil, no leaf litter packed into the fins.
- Have it checked before summer, not during it. A system that limps through May usually quits in July, which is the worst week of the year to be waiting on parts.
- Deal with small problems while they are small. A failing capacitor is a cheap part. The compressor it takes down with it is not.

There is no formula that survives contact with a real house, but these are the questions worth asking honestly.

The one rule we would defend anywhere: a repair that costs a meaningful fraction of a replacement, on a system already past ten, is usually money spent on borrowed time. Anyone who will not talk that through with you plainly is not doing you a favour.

If your system is under ten and getting basic maintenance, stop worrying about it.
If it is between ten and fifteen, it is not "old" — but it is the right time to start budgeting, so a failure in August is a decision rather than an emergency.
If it is over fifteen and running, you are ahead of the average. Get it checked every spring and know roughly what a replacement would cost, so you are not deciding under pressure with the house at 95 degrees.
